The Environmental benefits of bamboo
Why is bamboo fiber so incredible? It ensures a super soft biodegradable fabric which is also very sustainable, especially if combined with organic cotton.
Environmental benefits of bamboo:
- Bamboo has the advantage of growing very fast: it reaches its maximum height (up to 35m) in about 8 to 10 weeks.
- It can be harvested without affecting negatively the environment and continues to grow with no need to reseed.
- Compared to other plantations, bamboo uses only 1/3 of the water and does not need any artificial irrigation system. Rainwater alone is efficient enough.
- It generates up to 35% more oxygen than other plantations and the emission of carbon dioxide is minimized, as 1 hectare bamboo is able to absorb 62 tons of CO2 a year while a forest can only absorb 15 tons.
- It grows in a high density, which is an important fact as soil is becoming scarce due to the increasing population. 1 hectare bamboo can produce 60ton of raw-materials, while a forest can onlyoffer 20 tons, and a hectare of traditional cotton can only produce 2 tons.
- Bamboo grows in areas that are not used for cultivation and does not disrupt food production.
The bamboo yarn is obtained from viscose, which is derived from the pulp of the plant. This extraction process, demands water and chemical solvents and therefore reduces the environmental benefits gained during the farming phase.
In order to minimize this negative impact on the environment as much as possible, RE-BELLO combines the fiber of bamboo (70%) with organic cotton (30%). The fiber obtained is biodegradable, supremely soft, silky and hypo-allergenic.
