Pitti Immagine Uomo 2022, one of the most important international men’s fashion events, took place in Florence in mid-January. This edition the focus was on sustainable fashion, innovation and creativity.

The 101st edition of Pitti Immagine Uomo took place in Florence from 11 to 13 January.

What was it about? It’s one of the most important international men’s fashion events with focus on innovation and creativity.

Sustainability has finally become one of the key words of the fair: it’s time for fashion designers to change the mindset and the production of fashion industry, making it more ethical and sustainable.

In fact, we all know that overproduction and overconsumption are the biggest problems related to textile industry.

More and more designers are therefore trying to push for a change in the field of fashion, developing production techniques with a low environmental impact, researching innovative fabrics and creative solutions such as upcycling.

They are combining creativity, knowledge, innovative ideas in order to create new kind of garments: the clothes of tomorrow should be a mix of high quality, sustainability and durability.

Pitti Immagine Uomo has launched an exhibition project called “S|Style sustainable style” dedicated to the emerging brands and designers that create and produce eco-responsibility criteria.

"At this edition, the selection focused on the creative process that guides designers in their responsible approach," explains curator Giorgia Cantarini, "which can be summed up in 3 R's: Recycle, Reuse, Reinvent. Recycle what you have, Reuse it in collections, Reinvent garments or accessories creatively. Starting from what exists, unsold items, past collections, textile scraps and materials ready to be disposed of. The design of the future is also this: not just creating, but re-imagining".

Some of the selected brands are: JUNK, Umoja Shoes and Waste Yarn Project.

JUNK: high-grade green eyewear brand 100% made in Italy. Every pair of glasses is made of recovered plastic waste and it’s enhanced by the use of silver.

Umòja Shoes: all-time sneakers which combine African traditional know-how and innovative textiles, made of 100% plant-based raw materials - such as biological cotton, linen, hemp and hevea milk from the rubber plant - which are totally environmentally friendly.

Waste Yarn Project: they take surplus yarn from the fashion industry and put it into their uniquely designed knit system. The shape of each Waste Yarn Project garment is thoughtfully designed but each garment has a different combination of yarn and colours, always determined by the supply of surplus yarns.
